Another Long Story

Montgomery/Gottlieb

grew up in the same town
it was like she was born for me
i was turnin' seventeen years old
when she was just turnin' sixteen
our parents said we went to the same church
i probably kissed her in the nursery
but when you ask me what she's doin' now
i say, "man, it's just another long story."

drivin' out of nashville
i was bright-lighted by all the big trucks
so i got on the cb to explain,
"it's just that i'm loaded down with all my stuff."
made friends with some dude from arkansas
pulled over at a truckstop to have some coffee
and when he asked me what i was runnin' from
i said, "man, it's just another long story."

he said, "man, i know just what you're talkin' about
the words comin' out of your mouth,
you've heard too many times before,
so don't waste your words on a stranger
you better conserve your energy,
'cause it sounds like you're gonna need it,
besides, it's probably just another long story."

drivin' out of l.a.
i'd decided to make a clean break
go where the girls talk with a drawl
and the real men still eat steak
got a letter from some dude somewhere in america
he said, "hey man, i love your music, it's a little rock
and a little country, and how come the bigwigs don't
pusha you betta."
and i said, "it's just another long story"
long story
long story

Let's All Go To California

Montgomery/Finlin

i had a girl
lost her at the flying j
she stole my wallet
this is what she used to say

let's all go to california
let's all go to california
this town ain't got nothin' for ya'
let's all go to california

we'll walk the beaches
make love on the waves
find a guru to teach us
stay out all night and sleep all day
let's all go to california
let's all go to california
this town ain't got nothin' for ya'
let's all go to california

but she didn't quite make it
she didn't quite make it

i had a dream
lost her along the way
she dances with angels
this is what i hear her say

let's all go to california
let's all go to california
this town ain't got nothin' for ya'
let's all go to california
she didn't quite make it
she didn't quite make it

Visions of White

Montgomery

i went to church-down on my knees
i prayed for help-i prayed for strength
but then i dressed in black and gave myself to someone
i wanted to go as soon as i had come
oh, oh, oh, oh
my vision was clear and my back was strong
but i kept my options open for far too long
now there's a hole in me the size of you
that any fool could see right through
and oh, i'm thinkin' 'bout you, tonight
oh, i'm haunted by visions of white

i'm callin' you from another truckstop telephone
it rings and rings, but no one's home
and my desperate voice just hits your hardwood floors
being beaten' back and forth
but i'm thinkin' 'bout you, tonight
and oh, i'm haunted by visions of white

and you filled my dreams again last night
and in my sleepin' bless i felt your sweet gentleness
but in the morning light you were gone
but i'm thinkin' 'bout you, tonight
oh, i'm haunted by visions of white

my visions was clear and my back was strong
but i kept my options open for far too long
now there's a hole in me the size of you
that any fool could see right through, oh

I Wish I Were Blind

Springsteen

i love to see the cotton wood blossom in the early spring
i love to see the message of love that the bluebird brings
but when i see you walkin' within down along the strand
i wish i were blind when i see you with your man

i love to to see your hair shinin' in a long summers light
i love to watch the stars fill the sky on a summers night
music plays, take his hand, i watch how you touch
him as you start to dance and
i wish i were blind when i see you with your man

we struggle here, but all our loves in vain
and these eyes that once filled me with your beauty
now fill me with pain and the light that once entered
here is banished from me
and this darkness is all baby that my heart sees
and though this world is filled with the grace and
beauty of god's hand
i wish i were blind when i see you with your man

Lookin' Out For #1

Montgomery/Neigher

saw her walking down the sunset blvd.
pushin' her sleepin' hungry kids in a grocery cart
put a band-aid on with my five dollars
but those kids are growin' up so hard

but i fight to keep the passion
but i can feel myself growin' numb
i guess you call it self-protection
lookin' out for #1

there's an old man with alzheimer
he's got a hard time acceptin' it so he goes out on
these long walks
and he falls down in the middle of the street
and he just lays there, and no one
helps him

and i fight to keep the passion
but i can feel myself growin' numb
i guess you call it self-protection
lookin' out for #1

five years later i think back to that night on sunset blvd.
even drove past the place where i saw that woman
her kids must be going to school no, or somewhere
causin' trouble
but what do i care? what can i do about it, anyway?

but i fight to keep the passion
but i can feel myself growin' numb
i guess you call it self-protection
lookin' out for #1
lookin' out for #1
lookin' out for #1
it's killing me
it's killing me
it's killing me

Angel Tonight

Montgomery/Finlin

she lays down her head on her pillow
she's never felt so alone
she thinks of her friends and her family
she's one step closer to home
she thinks of a lover that left her
they get what they want and then leave
she stares at the pills on her dresser
closes her eyes and believes

she'll be an angel tonight
she's already made up her mind
she'll think of him as she takes her last breath
and her wings will surely beat him to death

she thinks of the good times and bad times
dancin' in old mexico
she holds her unborn children
a feeling that she'll never know

she'll be an angel tonight
she's already made up her mind
she'll think of them as she takes her last breath
and her wings will surely beat them to death

Stumbled

Montgomery/Gottlieb

lookin' into your eyes last night
i was fightin', i was fightin' a losin' fight,
but i was fightin'

talkin' on the phone today
i was taken by the things you had to say
you had me thinkin'

i stumbled, i fell
under your spell, spell
i crumbled, i crumbled, i crumbled

thinkin' all night long
there'll be no sleepin', no sleepin'
but i'm alone
you had me thinkin'

i stumbled, i fell
under your spell, spell
i crumbled, i crumbled, i crumbled

you find someone to love in this world
it cannot be denied
but in a couple of days and the harsh morning light
i think i found my stride

think i found my stride
oh, but it felt good loosin' it

i stumbled, i fell
under your spell, spell
i crumbled, i crumbled, i crumbled
i crumbled, i crumbled, i crumbled

Your Kind of Love

Montgomery/Pettibone

see you across the room
you're smokin' your cigarette
trying to work through
always giving and never get
and i'm lookin' for some kind of sign
you want to get out of this place
i'd take you anywhere you want to go
yeah, i've got a need to know

you're kind of love, baby
you're kind of love
you're kind of love, baby
you're kind of love

your smoke rises through the air
you're blowin' rings like you couldn't care
it's a hard thing when you've lost all faith
and you're lookin' for it anywhere
and i'm lookin' for some kind of sign
you want to get out of this place
i'd take you anywhere you want to go
yeah, i've got a need to know

he's out on the street, with somebody new
and i'm standin' here in front of you
and all that i need is one chance to know

you're kind of love, baby
you're kind of love
you're kind of love, baby
you're kind of love

Broken

Montgomery/Rollins/Wilson

like a child's toy that doesn't work anymore
over in the corner of the room on the floor
like a train that runs away and derails off the track
it never meets it's destination and it's never goin' back
once there was a love that left in such a mess
i still need forgiveness, but don't know how to confess
put back all the pieces 'til it looked like i had healed
but i'm the only one who knows i've forgotten how to feel
forgotten how to feel
tell me what good is that
why'd i go and steal something i had
now i can' take it back
broken
broken
broken
broken

used to be your lover
i used to be your friend
now i'm a deadman walkin'
not letin' anybody in
against moments of our happiness i have no defense
i guess that i was just afraid to be content
afraid to be content
tell me what good is that
why can't i just be
where i'm at
now i can't go back
broken
broken
broken
broken

now we live and learn by the choices that we make
and they can be returned
so we're left with what's in front of us
and all that we have given up only makes us feel
broken
broken
broken
broken

At Your Best

Montgomery/Neigher

i was lookin' at us
in a photograph i'd stuck in a book
at the same time it hurt
for a moment it felt so good
you were standing close
your head was cradled to my chest
and at that moment we were at our best
at our best

we were on our way home
from a show in monterey
drivin' south
down a breathtaking pch
you were standin' on a rock
so tall and picturesque
and at that moment you were at your best
at your best

you were standing close
your head was cradled to my chest
and at that moment we were at our best
at our best

i was thinkin' 'bout paper
and color and images
i was thinkin' this is my substitutes for you in the flesh
i was thinkin' baby
as long as these photographs exist
are in my possession
we'll go on and on
on and on
on and on
on and on
