This from John Graveling, Kevin's tour
manager/promoter:
ROCK'N'ROLL WILL NEVER DIE
And sometimes dreams come true. Last
night Tony Bramwell and I accompanied Kevin Montgomery & Band to Paul McCartney's 25th
anniversary Buddy Holly party at the Mermaid Theatre. Kevin had been asked to perform as his
father, Bob, was Buddy's closest friend during their school
years and his original musical partner, Buddy & Bob, prior to the
Crickets. Bob was
also responsible for writing "Heartbeat" as well as one of
the songs Kevin
performed last night, "Wishing", and a host of others. To
see the guys'
faces when they were introduced to Paul was just one of those,
never to be
forgotten moments. Mike Berry, who had a hit with "Tribute To
Buddy Holly"
way back in 1961 provided the house band, and we were treated
to performances
from Marti Wilde, Joe Brown, Tim Rice (doing his best Elvis
impersonation)
closely followed by his Ricky Nelson one. Bruce Welch, Dave Gilmore, Mick
Green (Johnny Kidd & The Pirates), but Kevin and the boys
brought the house
down with their versions of "Wishing" and "Not Fade
Away".
The reception was ecstatic, even Paul was rockin and rollin as Pat
Buchanan ripped another solo from his guitar and rounded off, for me at
least, nine
months of
"dreaming the dream". Last night proved there is music, categories do not
matter, this was rock 'n' roll, through the last four decades,
timeless and brilliant, a wonderful night and a stunning experience.
